About the course

Health and Safety Awareness (HSA) is CITB's one-day introduction to staying safe on a construction site. It's written for people starting out in construction and for operatives who want a recognised grounding: no experience or qualifications are needed.

The day covers five areas: general rules, regulations and responsibilities; health and welfare; general safety; high-risk activities; and environmental awareness. That takes in your own responsibilities and your employer's duties, typical site hazards and controls, working at height, manual handling, fire prevention, work equipment and occupational health, and what to do if you think someone is being put at risk.

CSCS accepts HSA as an alternative to the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment for the green Labourer card. You also need to pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test before you apply; the course doesn't include it.

The course runs in our classroom at Bradmarsh Business Park, Rotherham, about 20 minutes from Sheffield city centre, and live online with a tutor. Pass the trainer review and end-of-day exam and CITB issues a certificate valid for five years.

Questions about the HSA

Does this course get me a CSCS card?

It covers the qualification part of the green Labourer card: CSCS accepts HSA as an alternative to the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. You also need to pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, booked separately, and then apply to CSCS.

Is HSA the same as the CITB HS&E test?

No. HSA is a one-day course with its own exam at the end. The HS&E test is a separate test that you book with CITB, and CSCS asks for it alongside a qualification for most cards.

Do I need any experience?

No. The course is designed for all abilities and has no entry requirements, so it's a good first step if you're looking for work on site. You need English good enough to follow the course at operative level.

Can I take HSA online?

Yes. It runs live online with a tutor on fixed dates, as well as in our Rotherham classroom, and you take the exam online at the end. You need a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam and microphone, a reliable connection and a quiet space for the whole course; a phone isn't suitable.
