About the course

IOSH Managing Safely is for people who manage others and need to understand their health and safety responsibilities. It's written for any sector, so it works for a production supervisor in a Rotherham factory or a shift manager at a Doncaster distribution centre as well as for a site or office manager. No previous safety training is needed.

The course covers assessing risks, controlling risks, understanding your responsibilities, understanding common hazards, investigating incidents and measuring performance. It uses plain language and practical exercises rather than a lot of theory.

It runs live online with a tutor on set dates, so managers can join from home or work anywhere in Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley or Chesterfield. You'll need a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam, a microphone and a reliable internet connection, and a quiet room to work in. If you have several managers to train, we can run the course in-house at your site across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire.

You're assessed with an end-of-course assessment and a risk assessment project in your workplace. Pass both and IOSH issues your Managing Safely certificate, which can be checked online. The certificate has no expiry date, but IOSH recommends the one-day Managing Safely Refresher to keep up to date.

Questions about the Managing Safely

Managing Safely or Working Safely?

Managing Safely is for people who manage or supervise others and are responsible for how their team works. Working Safely is a one-day course for staff at any level who need the basics. If you're training a whole team, managers usually take Managing Safely and everyone else takes Working Safely.

IOSH Managing Safely or SMSTS?

If you run construction sites, SMSTS is the CITB course many principal contractors ask site managers to hold. IOSH Managing Safely isn't specific to construction, which makes it a good fit for managers in manufacturing, warehousing, facilities and the public sector, and for construction office and support staff with management duties.

Is there an IOSH Managing Safely course in Sheffield?

Our IOSH Managing Safely runs live online, so you can join from home or work in Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley or Chesterfield with no travel. Each date shows how and where it runs: any classroom dates listed are elsewhere in the country. For a group, we can run it in-house at your premises.

How is IOSH Managing Safely assessed?

There's an end-of-course assessment, plus a risk assessment project you carry out in your own workplace after the course. You need to pass both to get the IOSH certificate.

Does IOSH Managing Safely expire?

The certificate has no expiry date. IOSH recommends the one-day Managing Safely Refresher to keep your knowledge up to date, and some employers and clients ask for a recent certificate, so check what yours expects.

Can you run it for our managers at our site?

Yes. For a group from one employer we can run IOSH Managing Safely in-house at your premises in South Yorkshire or North Derbyshire. Tell us how many managers and where, and we'll talk you through dates and options.
