CITB courses

CITB's Site Safety Plus courses are the health and safety training widely asked for on UK construction sites. Build UK endorses SMSTS as the standard training for construction managers, and every certificate on these courses is issued by CITB once you pass.

In South Yorkshire our classroom courses run at Bradmarsh Business Park in Rotherham (S60 1BY), a few minutes from junctions 33 and 34 of the M1 and about 20 minutes by road from Sheffield city centre. The same courses also run live online with a tutor on fixed dates, so you can train from home or the office.

Choosing a course: SSSTS is for supervisors and team leaders, and SMSTS is for site managers and anyone running a site. The Temporary Works Supervisor and Coordinator courses cover the temporary works roles in BS 5975. SEATS covers a supervisor's environmental duties, and Health and Safety Awareness is the one-day course for new starters and operatives.

CITB certificates last five years. SMSTS, SSSTS and the Temporary Works Coordinator course each have a shorter refresher, which you must pass before your certificate expires; otherwise you take the full course again. Training a team? We can run these courses in-house at your site.

Where are your CITB classroom courses in South Yorkshire?

At BizSpace Business Centre, Bow Bridge Close, Bradmarsh Business Park, Rotherham S60 1BY. It's about 2 miles from Meadowhall, a few minutes from junctions 33 and 34 of the M1, and around 20 minutes by road from Sheffield city centre. Each course page lists its upcoming Rotherham dates.

Are the live online CITB courses the same as the classroom ones?

CITB allows these courses to be delivered remotely, so you follow the same syllabus with a tutor over video, on fixed dates and times. You take part in the group exercises and sit the end-of-course exam online under the tutor's supervision, and you receive the same CITB certificate. You need a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam and microphone, a reliable connection and a quiet space for the whole course; a phone isn't suitable.

How long do CITB certificates last?

Five years. SMSTS, SSSTS and Temporary Works Coordinator have refresher courses, and you must pass the refresher before your current certificate expires; if it lapses, CITB requires you to take the full course again. SEATS, Temporary Works Supervisor and Health and Safety Awareness have no refresher, so you retake the course to renew.

Do SMSTS or SSSTS get me a CSCS card?

No. CSCS doesn't accept SMSTS or SSSTS for a card application, or in place of the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. Supervisor and manager cards are based on a construction NVQ (a Level 3 or 4 supervisory NVQ for the gold Supervisor card, a management NVQ such as Level 6 for the Black Manager card) plus the right level of HS&E test. We offer those NVQs too.

Can you run CITB courses for our team at our site?

Yes. If you have several people to train, we can run SMSTS, SSSTS, the refreshers and the other CITB courses in-house at your premises, whether you're in Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley, Chesterfield or further afield. CITB sets minimum and maximum group sizes for each course, so tell us how many people and your preferred dates.
