Construction and manufacturing, side by side

Rotherham's work is a mix of building and making. The Advanced Manufacturing Park at Waverley, built on reclaimed opencast coal land, is home to the University of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and a long list of engineering firms. Next to it, the Waverley community has been taking shape since housebuilders started there in 2012. In the town centre, Rotherham Council and Muse turned a former derelict industrial site into Forge Island, with a cinema, a hotel and new waterside space. The venue itself is on Sheffield Road, a short way from Magna, the science centre in the old Templeborough steelworks.

CITB courses at the Rotherham venue

• SSSTS (two days) for supervisors and SMSTS (five days) for site managers, each with a refresher for when the certificate is due for renewal.
• CITB Health and Safety Awareness, a one-day course for new starters and operatives.
• SEATS, CITB's one-day site environmental awareness course for supervisors and managers.
• Temporary works: the Supervisor and Coordinator courses, plus a one-day Temporary Works Coordinator refresher.

These run in the classroom at Bradmarsh Business Park and live online, so a Rotherham delegate can choose between a short drive and joining from home.

For manufacturing and engineering employers

Factory, warehouse and workshop teams don't need construction courses. IOSH Managing Safely (three days) suits team leaders and managers, and IOSH Working Safely (one day) covers the essentials for everyone else. The NEBOSH National General Certificate is the next step for anyone taking on health and safety as part of their job. These are taught live online, and IOSH works well in-house for a whole shift or department.

NVQs on Rotherham sites

NVQs are assessed where you work, not in a classroom. Your assessor builds a portfolio with you from your own job and can observe you on site or by video. For people whose job is health and safety, the Level 3 NVQ Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is a practical place to start. For supervisors, the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision is the usual route to a Gold Supervisor card. An NVQ typically takes 6 to 8 weeks and is paid in full when you enrol.
