North Derbyshire's building work

Two schemes show the range of work around Chesterfield. Markham Vale, off junction 29a of the M1, is a 200-acre business park on the former Markham Colliery, run as a joint venture between Derbyshire County Council and HBD; by 2024 it had around 70 businesses and more than 2,700 jobs. Near the town centre, Chesterfield Waterside is a £340m regeneration of the canal basin, with offices at Basin Square and new homes at Waterside Quarter on a former timber yard. Industrial units, offices and housing each need supervisors and managers who understand their duties.

Classroom or online?

The CITB courses, including SMSTS, the SMSTS Refresher and SSSTS, run in the classroom in Rotherham and live online. Online courses are taught by a tutor in real time on fixed dates and lead to the same CITB certificate, so they're worth considering if a 35-minute drive each way for five days doesn't suit. NEBOSH for managers and safety advisers

Construction managers often choose the NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety. Managers in manufacturing, logistics and the public sector usually take the NEBOSH National General Certificate. Both are taught live online with a tutor, or you can study at your own pace by distance learning: see the NEBOSH Construction and NEBOSH General distance learning courses. For team leaders, IOSH Managing Safely runs live online over three days.

Senior NVQs, assessed where you work

For experienced health and safety advisers and managers, the Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is built from evidence of the work you already do. For directors and senior managers who lead the business, there's the Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Construction Senior Management. Neither involves travel: your assessor works with you through an online portfolio and observes you on site or by video. An NVQ typically takes 6 to 8 weeks and is paid in full when you enrol.

Is there a classroom venue in Chesterfield?

No. Our nearest classroom venue is at Bradmarsh Business Park, Rotherham S60 1BY, about 35 minutes by road outside rush hour via the M1 from junction 29 to junction 33. Many courses also run live online, and we can train a group at your premises.

Is a live online SMSTS the same as the classroom course?

It's the same five-day CITB course, taught live by a tutor on fixed dates, and the certificate is issued by CITB in the same way. You need a computer with a camera and microphone, a reliable connection and somewhere quiet to join from.

Can I take NEBOSH from Chesterfield?

Yes. The NEBOSH General and Construction Certificates are taught live online with a tutor, so you can join from home or work. You can also study either one at your own pace by distance learning.

Will an NVQ assessor come to my site?

Your assessor can observe you at work on site or by video, depending on the qualification. The rest is done through an online portfolio and a recorded professional discussion, so there's no travel to a centre.

Do you cover Dronfield, Staveley and Clay Cross?

Yes. Live online courses can be joined from anywhere, in-house courses run at your premises, and NVQs are assessed wherever you work. From Dronfield the Rotherham venue is about 30 minutes by road.
