About the course

The Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is for people whose job is health and safety: health and safety managers, senior advisers and consultants who develop policy, advise managers and lead how risk is controlled across an organisation. It isn't limited to construction, so it also suits safety professionals in manufacturing, logistics and other sectors across South Yorkshire.

Instead of exams and assignments, you prove your competence with evidence from the work you already do: policies and procedures you've written, risk assessments and safe systems of work you've developed, audits and inspections, accident investigations, and the advice and training you've given to managers and staff.

Your assessor maps your work against the qualification and holds a recorded professional discussion with you. Because it's work-based, you need a role with enough health and safety responsibility to build the portfolio.

People often compare it with the NEBOSH National Diploma. The NEBOSH Diploma is studied and examined; this NVQ is assessed on your job. If you need a starting point in health and safety knowledge first, the NEBOSH General Certificate runs live online and by distance learning.

Questions about the Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety Practice

Something else? Call 07939 593032.

Level 6 NVQ or the NEBOSH National Diploma?

Both are Level 6. The NEBOSH Diploma is a taught course with exams and assignments. The NVQ is assessed on evidence from your own health and safety role, so it suits experienced practitioners who already do the job. We offer the NVQ, not the NEBOSH Diploma.

Do I need to be working in health and safety?

Yes. You need a role where you develop or apply health and safety policy and practice, because the evidence comes from that work. If you're new to safety, start with the NEBOSH General Certificate or the Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety.

Does it count towards IOSH membership or a CSCS card?

IOSH and CSCS each set their own rules and lists of accepted qualifications, and these change. Check IOSH's current membership criteria, or CSCS's card finder for your occupation, before you rely on this NVQ for either.

Can I use work I've already done?

Your assessor decides what counts, but documents you've produced in your role, such as policies, risk assessments, audit reports and investigation reports, are typical evidence. Remove personal details before you upload them, and check your employer is happy for you to share them.
