ProQual / Level 6
The site manager's NVQ for a Black CSCS Manager card. For site, project and construction managers who run a site, assessed on your own job with no exams.
The Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management is the qualification most site managers take for the CSCS Black Manager card. It's for people who run a site now: site managers, senior site managers, project managers and construction managers on anything from housing developments to commercial, industrial and civil engineering schemes.
Level 6 sits at the same level as an honours degree on the national qualifications framework, but there are no lectures or exams. You prove your competence with evidence from the site you're running: programmes and progress reports, health and safety documents such as RAMS reviews, site inductions and inspections, quality records, meeting minutes, and how you manage subcontractors and the site team.
Your assessor maps your day-to-day work against the qualification, observes you on site or by video and holds a recorded professional discussion with you. Because there's nothing to travel to, it works for managers on sites anywhere around Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley and North Derbyshire.
With the NVQ and a pass in the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment test, you can apply for the Black Manager card. Many site managers also hold SMSTS, which covers the safety side of running a site, but CSCS doesn't accept SMSTS on its own for a card.
Site managers, senior site managers, project managers and construction managers who are currently responsible for running a site and need a Black CSCS Manager card.
An NVQ has no course dates. You prove you're competent with evidence from the work you already do, with an assessor guiding you from start to finish.
Enrol and pay online. We register you for the qualification.
You're assigned an assessor who plans your NVQ with you and guides you through it.
Gather evidence from the work you already do: documents, photos, reports and witness statements.
Your assessor reviews your evidence and confirms you meet each standard of the qualification.
Once you're signed off you receive your certificate and can apply for the CSCS card that goes with it.
An NVQ has no venue to travel to. It's assessed on the work you already do, so it suits site teams anywhere in Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley, North Derbyshire and beyond, with no time off site.

Big regeneration and industrial schemes across South Yorkshire mean plenty of work, and plenty of inductions. Here's what principal contractors usually check, role by role, and how to get it sorted before you start.
Most CSCS cards now depend on a recognised qualification. Here's how NVQ levels line up with the card colours, and how to work out which one fits your role.
A construction NVQ has no exams and no classroom days. Here's how the assessment works, step by step, and what counts as evidence.

A construction management or technical NVQ at Level 4 to 7, such as this Level 6 NVQ in Construction Site Management, plus a pass in the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment test taken within the last two years. You then apply to CSCS for the card.
There are no formal entry qualifications. What matters is your role: you need to be managing a site now, so you can show evidence of planning, safety, quality, people and progress. If you're a supervisor stepping up, the Level 4 Site Supervision NVQ may suit you better for now.
On the national qualifications framework (RQF), Level 6 is the same level as a bachelor's degree with honours. It's a different kind of qualification, though: it proves competence in your job rather than academic study.
Things you produce or use while running your site: programmes and look-aheads, progress reports, RAMS reviews and briefings, inductions, inspection and quality records, minutes of meetings and correspondence that shows decisions you've made. Witness statements from a contracts manager or client help too. Remove other people's personal details before you upload anything.
Not for the NVQ or the card, but many principal contractors expect site managers to hold an in-date SMSTS too. It runs in our Rotherham classroom and live online, so you can book it alongside your NVQ.
Level 6 is for people running a site. Level 7 in Construction Senior Management is for directors and senior managers who set the direction across several sites or the business. Both lead to the Black Manager card.
