Which NVQ do I need for my CSCS card?
NVQs and CSCS cards 4 min read Updated
Most CSCS cards now depend on a recognised qualification. Here's how NVQ levels line up with the card colours, and how to work out which one fits your role.
A CSCS card shows that the person holding it has the training and qualifications for the job they do on site, and most principal contractors ask to see one before you start work. For most cards, the qualification behind the card is a construction NVQ (an SVQ in Scotland) at the level that matches your role.
Which NVQ you need depends on what you do, not on how long you've been doing it. Here's how it fits together, or use our NVQ checker to get a suggestion for your role.
Two things most cards need
- A recognised qualification for your occupation, usually an NVQ at the right level.
- The CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test at the level for your role: operative, supervisor, or managers and professionals. CSCS asks for a pass within the last two years when you apply.
Some cards accept other qualifications, and the rules for each card are set by CSCS, so always check the current requirements for the card you're applying for. SMSTS and SSSTS certificates aren't accepted as the qualification for a card, although you can add them to the My Skills section of the CSCS app.
NVQ levels and card colours
| Card | Usual qualification | Typical roles |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Skilled Worker | Level 2 NVQ in your occupation | Skilled operatives and tradespeople |
| Gold Advanced Craft | Level 3 NVQ in your craft | Experienced tradespeople |
| Gold Supervisor | Level 3 or Level 4 NVQ in a supervisory or technical occupation | Supervisors, foremen and charge hands |
| Black Manager | Level 4 to 7 NVQ in construction management or a technical occupation | Site, project, contracts and senior managers |
The table shows the usual route, not the full CSCS rule book. Some trades have their own card schemes, and the list of accepted qualifications changes from time to time.
Choosing the right level
Level 2: operatives and tradespeople
Level 2 NVQs suit experienced operatives who have the skills but not the qualification, and lead to the Blue Skilled Worker card. For general site work, the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction and Civil Engineering Operations (General Construction) is a common choice. There are Level 2 NVQs for most trades, from groundworks to plastering: see every construction NVQ.
Level 3: supervisors
The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision is for supervisors and foremen who plan, allocate and check the work of a team. It's the usual route to a Gold Supervisor card.
Level 4: site supervisors
The Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision suits site supervisors and assistant site managers with wider responsibility for programme, quality and safety. It also leads to a Gold Supervisor card.
Levels 6 and 7: managers
The Level 6 NVQ in Construction Site Management is the usual choice for site managers and project managers working towards the Black Manager card. Managers on the commercial and technical side often take the Level 6 NVQ in Construction Contracting Operations Management. The Level 7 NVQ in Construction Senior Management is for directors and senior managers who lead the business.
Health and safety roles
If health and safety is your job rather than part of it, look at the Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety or, for advisers and managers, the Level 6 NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety Practice. Check with CSCS which card your role and qualification lead to.
Pick the level for the job you do now
An NVQ is assessed on evidence from your current work. If you're a supervisor, you can't easily produce evidence of managing a whole site, however ready you feel for it. Choose the level that matches the responsibilities you hold today, and take the next level when your role grows.
If your card is due to expire
CSCS has been moving every card onto a recognised qualification, which is why many experienced people who have held a card for years now need an NVQ to renew it. If that's you, start early: an NVQ typically takes 6 to 8 weeks if you keep your evidence coming. Once you're registered, CSCS's Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager card is designed for people with on-the-job experience who are completing their qualification; CSCS publishes the current conditions.
How the NVQ itself works
There are no classroom days and no exams. You build a portfolio of evidence from your own job, with an assessor guiding you, and you pay for the NVQ in full when you book online. We explain each step in how NVQ assessment works.
Because it's assessed on your own site, it makes no difference whether you work on a city-centre scheme in Sheffield, a warehouse build near Doncaster or anywhere else. If your team also needs SSSTS or SMSTS, those run in the classroom at our Rotherham venue and live online. Not sure which level you need? Call us with your job title and what you're responsible for, and we'll tell you which NVQ fits and which card it leads to.
