About the course

The Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision (Pathway 1, Building and Civil Engineering) is for people who supervise a whole site or a large part of one: site supervisors, assistant site managers and senior foremen on housing, commercial, industrial and civil engineering jobs.

It goes further than the Level 3 supervision NVQ. As well as running people, you show how you coordinate the work of several trades, keep the programme on track, control quality, manage health and safety on site and work with the site manager, the client's team and subcontractors.

All of it is assessed on your current job. You gather evidence such as programmes and look-aheads, inspection and quality records, method statement briefings and meeting notes, and your assessor observes your work on site or by video. There's no classroom to attend.

With the NVQ and a pass in the CITB supervisory-level Health, Safety and Environment test, you can apply for the CSCS Gold Supervisor card. If you move into site management later, the Level 6 NVQ in Construction Site Management is the usual next step towards the Black Manager card.

Which card does the Level 4 Site Supervision NVQ lead to?

The CSCS Gold Supervisor card. You'll also need a pass in the CITB supervisory-level Health, Safety and Environment test taken within the last two years when you apply.

What does Pathway 1 (Building and Civil Engineering) mean?

The qualification has pathways for different kinds of work. Pathway 1 is for supervisors on building and civil engineering sites, which covers most general construction work, from housing and commercial schemes to groundworks and infrastructure.

Level 4 or Level 3: which is right for me?

Both lead to the Gold card. Choose Level 4 if you supervise a site or a large section of one and coordinate several trades. Choose the Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision NVQ if you run a single team or trade package.

Can it count towards a Black card later?

The Black Manager card needs a management-level NVQ. Most people who move up from site supervision take the Level 6 NVQ in Construction Site Management once they're running a site.
