NVQs

An NVQ proves you can do your job to the national standard, using evidence from the work you already do. There are no exams and no classroom days, so there's nothing to travel to: your assessor works with you wherever your site is, whether that's in Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley, Chesterfield or further afield.

Most people take an NVQ because a site or employer has asked for a CSCS card. Construction NVQs at Level 2 lead to the Blue Skilled Worker card, Level 3 and 4 supervisory and technical NVQs to the Gold Supervisor card, and Level 4 to 7 management and technical NVQs to the Black Manager card. Pick the NVQ that matches the job you do now, because your evidence has to come from it.

You enrol and pay the full fee online, with VAT added at checkout. An NVQ typically takes 6 to 8 weeks, depending mostly on how quickly you gather your evidence.

How an NVQ works

Paying for your NVQ

You pay the full fee when you enrol online, so there's nothing more to pay later. Prices exclude VAT, which is added at checkout.

Which NVQ do I need for my CSCS card?

It depends on your role and the card you've been asked for. Construction NVQs at Level 2 lead to the Blue Skilled Worker card. Supervisory and technical NVQs at Level 3 or 4 lead to the Gold Supervisor card. Management and technical NVQs at Level 4 to 7 lead to the Black Manager card. You'll also need to pass the right level of CITB Health, Safety and Environment test before you apply. Our NVQ checker asks four quick questions and shows the NVQs that fit.

Does an NVQ give me a CSCS card automatically?

No. When the awarding body issues your certificate, you apply to CSCS for the card yourself. CSCS asks for your qualification and a pass in the right CITB Health, Safety and Environment test taken within the last two years.

Will SMSTS or SSSTS get me a Gold or Black card?

No. CSCS doesn't accept SMSTS or SSSTS for a card. They're safety courses, not qualifications in your occupation. For a Gold or Black card you need the NVQ that matches your role.

How is an NVQ assessed?

On the work you already do. You build a portfolio of evidence, such as documents you've written, photos of your work and witness statements from people who've seen you do it. Your assessor also observes you at work, on site or by video, and holds a recorded professional discussion with you. There are no exams.

I work in Doncaster (or Barnsley, or Chesterfield). Do I need to travel?

No. An NVQ has no classroom days. You upload evidence to an online portfolio, and your assessor observes your work on your own site or by video, wherever you work in South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire or beyond.

How long does it take and how do I pay?

An NVQ typically takes 6 to 8 weeks. People who upload evidence regularly finish sooner. You pay the full fee online when you enrol, with VAT added at checkout. There's no deposit. An employer can enrol several people in one booking by changing the number in the basket.
