About the course

This is Pathway 5, Architectural Metalwork Installer, of the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Specialist Installation Occupations. It's for architectural metalwork installers whose work is installing architectural metalwork such as balustrades, handrails, stairs and screens, and it gives you a recognised Level 2 qualification for a specialist trade that often has no obvious NVQ.

Your evidence comes from the jobs you're already on, whether that's in Sheffield, Rotherham or further afield. Typical evidence: photos of balustrades, handrails, stairs or screens you've installed, the drawings and fixing details you worked to, and statements from your supervisor.

You don't sit in a classroom for this one. Enrol and pay online, and we register you and assign your assessor, who tells you exactly what to collect. Expect it to take typically 6 to 8 weeks if you keep the evidence coming.

Once you've achieved it, you can apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card, which is valid for five years. CSCS also asks that you've passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the level for your occupation within the last two years.

Is the Architectural Metalwork Installer pathway the right one for me?

Choose it if most of your work is installing architectural metalwork such as balustrades, handrails, stairs and screens. The same qualification also comes in Acoustic Packages and Frames Installer pathways, each with its own page. If your work spans more than one, ask us before you enrol and we'll check the pathway against what you actually do.

Can I get a CSCS card while I'm still working towards the Level 2 NVQ in Specialist Installation (Architectural Metalwork Installer)?

Usually, yes. If you've worked as a architectural metalwork installer for at least a year in the last three and you're registered on the NVQ, CSCS offers an Experienced Worker card. It lasts one year and can't be renewed, so the idea is to finish the NVQ in that time and then apply for the Blue Skilled Worker card. You'll need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the right level either way.

How long does the Level 2 NVQ in Specialist Installation (Architectural Metalwork Installer) take?

Typically 6 to 8 weeks. The biggest factor is how quickly you gather the evidence: if you're working as a architectural metalwork installer every day and send photos and statements as you go, it moves quickly.
