Work along the M1 and the Dearne Valley

A lot of Barnsley's recent building has followed the M1 and the A6195 Dearne Valley Parkway. Gateway 36, on the former Rockingham Colliery land near junction 36, is a business park of industrial and logistics units built in phases. In the town centre, the council's Glass Works scheme brought a refurbished market, a new library, shops and leisure space around a public square. Work like this needs groundworkers, steel erectors, cladders and fit-out trades, and supervisors to run each section.

From the tools to a Gold card

A common route for someone moving from the tools into supervising:

  1. CITB Health and Safety Awareness (one day) gives new starters a grounding in site safety.
  2. SSSTS (two days) is the CITB course for supervisors, with a one-day SSSTS Refresher to renew it.
  3. The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision or the Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision, assessed on your own site, is the usual qualification behind a Gold Supervisor card. CSCS also asks for the CITB supervisory health, safety and environment test.

Not sure whether Level 3 or Level 4 fits your role? The NVQ checker asks a few questions about what you do. NVQs typically take 6 to 8 weeks and are paid in full when you enrol.

Managers, temporary works and the wider workforce

Site managers take the five-day SMSTS. Anyone looking after excavations, propping or scaffolds day to day should consider Temporary Works Supervisor. These CITB courses run in the classroom in Rotherham as well as live online. For warehouse and factory teams on the business parks, IOSH Working Safely is a one-day course that works well live online, or in-house for a group.

How far is the training venue from Barnsley?

About 25 minutes by road outside rush hour. It's at Bradmarsh Business Park, Rotherham S60 1BY: take the M1 south to junction 34, then the A6109 into Rotherham.

Can I get there without a car?

Yes. Take a train from Barnsley to Meadowhall, then a Northern train to Rotherham Central, which is about 1.2 miles from the venue. A taxi from Meadowhall is about two and a half miles.

What do I need for a Gold CSCS Supervisor card?

Usually a Level 3 or Level 4 NVQ in a supervisory or technical occupation, such as Occupational Work Supervision or Construction Site Supervision, plus a pass in the CITB supervisory health, safety and environment test. SSSTS on its own isn't accepted for the card. CSCS sets the rules, so check the current requirements for your card.

Can I take SSSTS online?

Yes. SSSTS is taught live online by a tutor on fixed dates as well as in the classroom in Rotherham. It's the same two-day CITB course, and the certificate is issued by CITB.

Do you cover Penistone and Stocksbridge?

Yes. The Rotherham venue is about 25 to 30 minutes away by road, live online courses can be joined from anywhere, and NVQs are assessed on your own site wherever you work.
