Building the sheds, and running them

Doncaster's motorway and rail links have made it a centre for logistics. iPort at Rossington, by junction 3 of the M18, is a rail freight interchange with large warehouses alongside the terminal. To the north-east, Unity wraps around Stainforth and Hatfield on about 650 acres, opened up by a link road from junction 5 of the M18, and is planned for around 3,100 homes as well as employment land. Schemes of this size mean a great deal of groundworks, steel frames, cladding and fit-out, and a lot of people supervising it.

CITB courses for warehouse and civils sites

  • SSSTS for supervisors and section foremen, and SMSTS for site and project managers.
  • Temporary Works Supervisor, for the people looking after excavations, propping, falsework and edge protection day to day.
  • SEATS, one day on the environmental side of running a site, such as waste, pollution prevention and nuisance to neighbours.

IOSH and NEBOSH for logistics managers

Once the buildings are handed over, the people running them need different training. IOSH Managing Safely is a three-day course for shift managers and team leaders in warehouses and distribution centres, taught live online, or in-house at your premises for a group. Health and safety advisers and operations managers often go on to the NEBOSH National General Certificate, taught live online or studied by distance learning.

NVQs for Doncaster site teams

For supervisors, the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision is the usual route to a Gold Supervisor card. For site managers, the Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management is the usual choice for the Black Manager card. Coming from Worksop or Bassetlaw? The venue is about 30 minutes from Worksop outside rush hour, via the A57 and the M1 from junction 31 to junction 33. From Mexborough it's about 20 minutes.

In-house training in Doncaster

SSSTS is a construction course for people supervising work on a building site. If you supervise people in a working warehouse rather than building one, IOSH Managing Safely is usually the better fit.
