About the course

The SMSTS Refresher is for site managers who already hold an in-date SMSTS certificate. Pass it and your certification is renewed for another five years, so you can keep running sites without repeating the full five-day course.

It brings you up to date with changes in law, guidance and HSE focus since you last trained, and revisits the core of the full course: CDM 2015, risk assessments and method statements, RIDDOR, the big site risks such as working at height and excavations, occupational health and behavioural safety.

Timing matters. CITB only lets you take the refresher while your current certificate is still valid. If it expires first, you must take the full SMSTS again. You'll need to show your certificate when you book; if you can't find it, your record can be checked on CITB's online card checker.

The refresher runs in our classroom at Bradmarsh Business Park, Rotherham, a few minutes from junctions 33 and 34 of the M1, and live online with a tutor. Both end with a CITB exam.

Who it's for

Site managers, project managers, contracts managers and directors who hold an in-date SMSTS certificate, from the full course or a previous refresher.
If your certificate has expired, book the full SMSTS instead.

SMSTS Refresher (SMSTS-R) runs in the classroom at our training venue in Rotherham: 10 upcoming dates at Rotherham (Bradmarsh Business Park), about 20 minutes from Sheffield city centre outside rush hour. If travelling doesn't suit, the live online dates are taught by a tutor in real time.

When should I book my SMSTS Refresher?

Before your current certificate expires: CITB won't accept an expired certificate for the refresher. Book a few months ahead, so a full course, a sick day or a busy spell on site doesn't push you past the date.

My SMSTS has expired. Can I still do the refresher?

No. Once it has expired, CITB requires you to take the full five-day SMSTS again to get back into the scheme. That's why it pays to book the refresher in good time.

How do I check when my SMSTS expires?

The expiry date is on your certificate. If you can't find it, CITB's online card checker shows your Site Safety Plus record. Have your details to hand when you book.

Can I do the SMSTS Refresher online?

Yes. It runs live online with a tutor on fixed dates, as well as in our Rotherham classroom, and you sit the exam online at the end. You need a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam and microphone, a reliable connection and a quiet space for the whole course; a phone isn't suitable.
