CITB / TWC
CITB's two-day Temporary Works Coordinator course on managing temporary works under BS 5975. Classroom dates in Rotherham, near Sheffield, and live online with a tutor.
Falsework, formwork, propping, excavation support and hoardings are all temporary works, and when they fail the results can be catastrophic. BS 5975 puts a Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) at the centre of controlling them on site. This CITB course explains the role and the management process around it.
Over two days you look at the TWC's duties and the roles around it, including the designated individual, designers and the Temporary Works Supervisor; the temporary works register, design briefs, design checks and permits to load and strike; the statutory side of temporary works; risk assessments and method statements; and the four Cs: communication, co-ordination, co-operation and competence.
It's a coordination course, not a technical design course. CITB is clear that passing it doesn't by itself make you competent as a TWC: competence comes from education, training and experience, judged by your company's designated individual. It suits managers, supervisors and engineers who already deal with temporary works on their projects.
The course runs in our classroom at Bradmarsh Business Park, Rotherham, about 20 minutes from Sheffield city centre, and live online with a tutor. Pass and CITB issues a certificate valid for five years; renew it with the one-day TWC Refresher before it expires.
Site managers, project managers, agents, engineers and supervisors who are, or will be, appointed Temporary Works Coordinator.
There are no formal entry requirements, but you'll get most from it with some site management or supervisory experience. CITB's free Temporary works awareness eLearning is a useful primer.
Tutor-led in the classroom or live online. Prices are per delegate and exclude VAT.

For the supervisor on site
CITB runs separate courses for temporary works supervisors and coordinators, both built on BS 5975. Here's how the two roles differ, who should attend which, what to know before you go and when to refresh.
Scaffolds, props, excavation supports and formwork all need managing. Here's what the temporary works coordinator is responsible for, where the role comes from and who should take it on.

Not on its own. CITB says training is an essential part of competence, but competence comes from education, training and experience together, and your company's designated individual decides who is appointed. The course gives you the knowledge, and the CITB certificate, to support that appointment.
The coordinator manages the temporary works process across the site: the register, design briefs, checks and permits. A supervisor looks after particular temporary works day to day and reports to the coordinator. The TWC course is two days; the Temporary Works Supervisor course is one.
Yes. It has 22 questions in 45 minutes, a mix of multiple choice and short written answers, and you can use your course workbook and any notes you make during the course. You also need to pass a trainer review.
It's valid for five years. Take the one-day Temporary Works Co-ordinator Refresher before it expires; if it lapses, CITB requires you to take the full two-day course again.
Our classroom dates are in Rotherham, at Bradmarsh Business Park (S60 1BY), about 2 miles from Meadowhall and a few minutes from junctions 33 and 34 of the M1. The course also runs live online, and we can run it in-house for a team.
