CITB / SSSTS
CITB's two-day Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme for supervisors, foremen and team leaders. Classroom dates in Rotherham, near Sheffield, and live online with a tutor.
SSSTS is CITB's health and safety course for anyone who supervises work on a construction site: foremen, chargehands, gangers, trade supervisors and people about to step up. It explains what the law expects of a supervisor and how to run a safe, well-organised work area day to day.
Over two days you cover the Health and Safety at Work Act and CDM 2015, risk assessments and method statements, working at height, fire safety, COSHH, manual handling and the occupational health risks on site. There's a strong focus on the supervisor's own behaviour: briefing a team, communicating clearly and leading by example. You prepare and deliver a short toolbox talk as part of the course.
In South Yorkshire, SSSTS runs in our classroom at Bradmarsh Business Park in Rotherham, about 20 minutes from Sheffield city centre, and live online with a tutor. You must attend both full days.
Pass and CITB issues your SSSTS certificate, valid for five years; renew it with the one-day SSSTS Refresher before it expires. If you go on to run sites, the next step is the five-day SMSTS. SSSTS doesn't get you a CSCS card on its own: the gold Supervisor card needs a Level 3 or 4 supervisory NVQ, which we also offer.
Supervisors, foremen, chargehands and team leaders on construction sites.

No previous qualifications are needed, but you must hold or be preparing for a supervisory role, and your English must be good enough to join in the group work and give a toolbox talk.
Tutor-led in the classroom or live online. Prices are per delegate and exclude VAT.

Big regeneration and industrial schemes across South Yorkshire mean plenty of work, and plenty of inductions. Here's what principal contractors usually check, role by role, and how to get it sorted before you start.
Both are CITB site safety courses, but they're written for different jobs. Here's how to tell which one fits your role, what each involves and what principal contractors usually expect.
CITB's one-day Health and Safety Awareness course is the usual first step for new starters on site. Here's what it covers, how the exam works, and how it fits with the HS&E test and the CSCS Labourer card.

SSSTS is designed for supervisors, not site managers. If you're responsible for running a whole site, CITB's course is the five-day SMSTS, which Build UK endorses as the standard training for construction managers. SSSTS is the right course if you supervise a gang, a trade or an area of a site.
Supervisors and team leaders take SSSTS (two days). Site managers, project managers and anyone running a site take SMSTS (five days). If you're new to managing health and safety, CITB recommends starting with SSSTS.
Yes, if your site asks for one: SSSTS doesn't replace a CSCS card, and CSCS doesn't accept it for a card application or in place of the HS&E test. Supervisors usually apply for the gold Supervisor card, which needs a Level 3 or 4 construction supervisory NVQ and the CITB supervisory HS&E test.
It's in Rotherham, at Bradmarsh Business Park (S60 1BY), about 2 miles from Meadowhall and a few minutes from junctions 33 and 34 of the M1. From Sheffield city centre it's around 20 minutes by road. SSSTS also runs live online if travelling doesn't suit.
You must attend both full days for the certificate. If you have to miss day two, CITB lets you complete it on another course within 30 days. If you miss part of day one, you start the course again.
