About the course

The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision is for people who already supervise work on site: trade foremen, chargehands, gangers and section supervisors who allocate work, check it and keep their team safe. If a principal contractor has asked you for a Gold card, this is the most common route.

Your evidence comes from the supervising you do now. That means briefings and toolbox talks you've given, work you've planned and allocated, inspections and quality checks you've carried out, and how you've dealt with problems on the job. Your assessor helps you plan which evidence covers which part of the qualification.

There's no classroom to attend, so it suits supervisors working across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire who can't take days off site. You build your portfolio online and your assessor observes your work on site or by video.

When you've passed, you can apply for the CSCS Gold Supervisor card once you also hold a pass in the CITB supervisory-level Health, Safety and Environment test. Many supervisors pair the NVQ with the two-day SSSTS course, which covers the safety side of the role.

Who it's for

Working supervisors, foremen and chargehands in any construction trade who direct a team day to day and need a Gold CSCS Supervisor card. You need to be in a supervisory role now, so you can show the work.

What you'll learn

  • Planning and allocating work to your team
  • Briefings, toolbox talks and communicating on site
  • Checking work for quality and progress
  • Health, safety and welfare in the work you supervise
  • Working with other trades and site management
  • Dealing with problems, delays and changes

Questions about the Level 3 NVQ

Something else? Call 07939 593032.

Which CSCS card does the Level 3 supervision NVQ lead to?

The Gold Supervisor card. As well as the NVQ, CSCS asks for a pass in the CITB supervisory-level Health, Safety and Environment test taken within the last two years.

Should I take the Level 3 or the Level 4 NVQ?

Both lead to the Gold Supervisor card. Level 3 suits supervisors and foremen who run a team or a trade package. The Level 4 NVQ in Construction Site Supervision suits people who supervise a whole site or a large part of one, such as assistant site managers. If you're unsure, our NVQ checker or a quick call will help.

I've done SSSTS. Do I still need the NVQ?

For a Gold card, yes. SSSTS is a CITB safety course and CSCS doesn't accept it for a card. It's still useful: much of what you do to manage safety on site can become evidence for the NVQ.

Do I need to be supervising now?

Yes. The NVQ is assessed on real supervisory work, so you need to be running a team or a section of work while you complete it. If you're between jobs, call us before you enrol.

Can I carry on working while I do it?

Yes. There are no classroom days. You add evidence to your online portfolio as you go, and your assessor fits observations around your work on site or by video.
