About the course

This is NEBOSH's certificate for people who manage health and safety on construction sites. NEBOSH replaced its National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety with a newer qualification, Health and Safety Management for Construction (UK), and that's the certificate this course leads to. Many people still know it by the old name.

It covers the management side of site safety, including CDM 2015 duties, risk assessments and method statements, and checking that controls work. It then covers the hazards that matter most on site: work at height, excavations, demolition, plant and work equipment, fire, electricity, and health risks such as dust, noise and vibration.

Our tutor-led course runs live online on set dates, so site managers and supervisors from Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley and Chesterfield can take part without travelling. You'll need a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam, a microphone and a reliable internet connection, and a quiet room to work in. If your site hours make fixed dates difficult, the same certificate is available by distance learning.

NEBOSH assesses the qualification with a single digital open-book assessment based on a construction scenario, which you complete within a set window and submit online. A NEBOSH examiner marks it. Holders can apply for the CSCS Academically Qualified Person card, which also needs a pass in the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment test.

Who it's for

Site managers, supervisors, project managers and health and safety advisers who need a recognised safety qualification built around construction. It also suits people moving from a site role into health and safety, and principal contractor and client staff who manage CDM duties.

Questions about the NEBOSH Construction

Something else? Call 07939 593032.

Is this the NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety?

It's the current version of it. NEBOSH withdrew the National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety and replaced it with Health and Safety Management for Construction (UK). If a job advert or client asks for the NEBOSH Construction Certificate, this is the qualification you take now.

Can the NEBOSH Construction Certificate get me a CSCS card?

Holders can apply for the CSCS Academically Qualified Person (AQP) card. You'll also need to pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment test. The AQP card lasts five years. Check the CSCS card finder for the current rules before you apply.

SMSTS or NEBOSH Construction: which do I need?

SMSTS is CITB's course for people who run sites, and it's what many principal contractors ask site managers to hold. NEBOSH Construction is a longer qualification with a NEBOSH assessment, suited to people moving into health and safety roles or who want a formal qualification. Some managers hold both. See the SMSTS page for its classroom and online dates.

How is it assessed?

By one digital open-book assessment set by NEBOSH. You're given a construction scenario and answer questions about it within a set window, using your notes, then submit it online. A NEBOSH examiner marks it.

Can I take it in a classroom near Sheffield?

Our tutor-led course runs live online, which means no travel from anywhere in South Yorkshire or North Derbyshire. If you need to train a group from one company, ask us about running it in-house.
