Gold CSCS card: Level 3 or Level 4 NVQ?

NVQs and CSCS cards 5 min read Updated

Both the Level 3 and Level 4 supervisory NVQs lead to the CSCS Gold Supervisor card. Here's how to choose between them, what else the card needs and where SSSTS fits.

If you supervise on site and your CSCS card is due for renewal, or you've been told you need a Gold card to keep working, you'll come across two NVQs: the Level 3 in Occupational Work Supervision and the Level 4 in Construction Site Supervision. Both lead to the same card. The difference is the size of the job each one is built around.

What the Gold Supervisor card needs

CSCS sets two requirements for the Supervisor card:

  1. A construction-related supervisory or technical NVQ at Level 3 or Level 4 (or the SVQ equivalent in Scotland).
  2. The CITB Specialist Supervisory Health, Safety and Environment test, passed within the two years before you apply.

The card is valid for five years. You book the HS&E test with CITB, and then apply to CSCS with your NVQ certificate and test details. CSCS's online card finder confirms which test and qualification apply to your occupation, so check it before you book either.

Level 3: Occupational Work Supervision

The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision is for supervisors who plan, allocate and check the work of a team. Think foremen, charge hands, gangers and working supervisors for a trade contractor. Your evidence comes from running your team's part of the job: allocating work, briefing method statements, checking quality, keeping people safe and reporting progress to the site manager.

Choose Level 3 if:

  • you lead a team or gang in one trade or activity
  • someone else manages the site and the programme as a whole
  • you spend a good part of the day working alongside your team

Level 4: Construction Site Supervision

The Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision suits site supervisors and assistant site managers with wider responsibility across the site: coordinating several trades, working to the programme, managing quality and health and safety across a larger area, and stepping in for the site manager. Our Level 4 is the building and civil engineering pathway.

Choose Level 4 if:

  • you coordinate more than one trade or subcontractor
  • you're involved in the programme, site logistics and quality checks across the job
  • you deputise for the site manager, or you're on track to become one

Isn't Level 4 better because it's higher?

Only if it matches your job. An NVQ is assessed on evidence from the work you do now, and the Level 4 units expect site-wide responsibilities. If you lead a single team, you'll struggle to show evidence of coordinating trades and running the programme, and the qualification will take longer or stall. Pick the level that fits your current role and take the next one when your responsibilities grow.

The card itself doesn't care which you hold: both lead to the Gold Supervisor card.

How long it takes and how you pay

Our NVQ pages show a typical timescale of 6 to 8 weeks, and the people who upload evidence regularly finish soonest. You enrol online and pay the full fee when you book, with no deposit. There are no classroom days and no exams; our guide to how NVQ assessment works explains the portfolio, observation and professional discussion.

Can I keep working while I complete it?

CSCS offers an Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager card for people with on-the-job experience (normally at least a year in the last three) who are registered on an approved supervisory NVQ at Level 3 or above and have passed the right HS&E test. It lasts three years and can't be renewed, so it's a bridge while you finish, not an alternative. Check the current conditions with CSCS.

Where does SSSTS fit?

CSCS doesn't accept SSSTS for a card, but many principal contractors expect supervisors to hold it. The two do different jobs: SSSTS is two days of CITB health and safety training for supervisors, with a five-year certificate; the NVQ proves your competence across the whole supervisory role. Plenty of supervisors hold both, and SSSTS gives you useful background for the health and safety side of the NVQ. If you're wondering whether SSSTS is enough to run a job, see can you run a site with SSSTS?

Questions supervisors ask

"I've supervised for years but never had a qualification"

That's exactly who these NVQs are for. Experience is what produces the evidence, so years of supervising usually mean you have plenty to show. The NVQ puts a recognised qualification behind what you already do.

"I'm self-employed. Can I still do it?"

Usually, yes. The evidence comes from the jobs you supervise, whoever they're for, and witness testimony can come from the main contractor's site manager or your client. Talk to us before enrolling if most of your work is on your own on small jobs, because you'll need to show you supervise other people.

Not sure which level?

The NVQ checker asks about your role and suggests the right qualification. Our broader guide to which NVQ you need for your CSCS card covers the other card colours.

Where to take it

The NVQ is assessed where you work, so it suits supervisors on sites anywhere around Sheffield, Barnsley and Doncaster. If you also need SSSTS, it runs in the classroom at our Rotherham venue and live online. Our page on training for Barnsley site teams sets out the classroom route from the M1 and the next dates.
