About the course

This is the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, studied by self-study distance learning. It's the same qualification and the same NEBOSH assessments as our tutor-led course; the difference is that you set the pace.

Distance learning suits people who can't take a block of days away from work: shift workers, supervisors with site or production commitments, and anyone who'd rather study in the evenings or at weekends. You can study from anywhere in Sheffield, South Yorkshire or beyond.

The course covers how health and safety is managed (NG1) and the hazards found in most workplaces (NG2), from risk assessment and management systems to stress, manual handling, chemicals, work equipment, fire and electricity.

Prefer a tutor-led course with fixed dates? Our NEBOSH General Certificate also runs live online.

What you'll learn

  • Why we manage health and safety: moral, legal and financial reasons
  • How health and safety management systems work
  • Managing risk: people, behaviour and processes
  • Monitoring, measuring and reviewing performance
  • Physical and psychological health, including stress and violence
  • Musculoskeletal health and manual handling
  • Chemical and biological agents
  • General workplace issues, including work at height and vehicles
  • Work equipment
  • Fire
  • Electricity
  • The practical risk assessment

Who it's for

Managers, supervisors and anyone starting a health and safety career who needs to fit study around work. It suits people who are comfortable studying on their own.

How distance learning works

  1. 1

    Enrol any day

There are no course dates. Enrol online and start when it suits you.

  2. 2

    Study at your own pace

Fit your study around work and home, with 12 months' online access.

  3. 3

    Take your assessment

Sit your assessment when you're ready. Pass, and you receive your certificate.

Enrol and start on any day. Work through the online study material at your own pace, with a tutor to help when you need it. When you're ready, you sit NEBOSH's assessments on one of its set dates: NG1 is an open-book exam taken online, and NG2 is a practical risk assessment you carry out at a workplace. NEBOSH marks both and issues your certificate.
