About the course

This is the Reinforced Bitumen Membrane pathway of the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Waterproof Membrane Roofing Systems. It's for flat roofers who lay built-up bitumen membrane roofs, including the upstands, outlets and details that keep them watertight.

Your evidence comes from the sites you work on, anywhere from Barnsley to Worksop. Typical evidence: photos of the roof build-up from deck to cap sheet, details at upstands and outlets, the specifications and hot works permits you worked to, and statements from your supervisor.

You don't sit in a classroom for this one. Enrol and pay online, and we register you and assign your assessor, who tells you exactly what to collect. Expect it to take typically 6 to 8 weeks if you keep the evidence coming.

Once you've achieved it, you can apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card, which is valid for five years. CSCS also asks that you've passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the level for your occupation within the last two years.

Can I get a CSCS card while I'm still working towards the Level 2 NVQ in Waterproof Membrane Roofing?

Usually, yes. If you've worked as a flat roofer for at least a year in the last three and you're registered on the NVQ, CSCS offers an Experienced Worker card. It lasts one year and can't be renewed, so the idea is to finish the NVQ in that time and then apply for the Blue Skilled Worker card. You'll need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the right level either way.

Do I have to come to your Rotherham venue?

No. An NVQ is assessed on the work you do, so there are no course dates or classroom sessions. Our venue at Bradmarsh Business Park in Rotherham is used for CITB classroom courses such as SSSTS and SMSTS; for the Level 2 NVQ in Waterproof Membrane Roofing the evidence comes from your own jobs.

I'm a self-employed flat roofer. Can I still do it?

Yes, as long as you're working in the trade and can show evidence from real jobs. Witness statements can come from someone who has seen your work, such as the site supervisor or the contractor you're working for. Your assessor will tell you what's acceptable before you start collecting.
