About the course

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Accessing Operations and Rigging covers erecting, altering and dismantling access equipment safely. For most people it's part of the route to a CISRS Scaffolder card, alongside CISRS's own training and skills test.

Your evidence comes from the work you're doing now, from Doncaster and Barnsley to Chesterfield. Typical evidence: photos of scaffolds you've helped erect, alter and strike, the drawings, design details and handover paperwork for those jobs, and statements from your chargehand or supervisor.

There are no course dates and nothing to attend. You enrol and pay in full online, we register you, and your assessor plans with you what evidence you need. It typically takes 6 to 8 weeks, depending on how quickly the evidence comes together.

The NVQ doesn't expire. On its own it doesn't get you a CISRS card: CISRS also asks for its Part 1 and Part 2 training, a skills test and the Health, Safety and Environment test. CISRS sets those rules, so check the current card requirements with CISRS.

Who it's for

Trainee and experienced scaffolders working towards a CISRS Scaffolder card, and others working in access and rigging who need a Level 2 NVQ. You need to be working in the role.

Will the NVQ get me my CISRS Scaffolder card?

It's one of the requirements, not the whole route. CISRS also asks for its Part 1 and Part 2 courses, experience after Part 2, a skills test and a Health, Safety and Environment test. Check the current rules with CISRS, then use the NVQ to tick off the qualification part.

I'm a self-employed scaffolder. Can I still do it?

Yes, as long as you're working in the trade and can show evidence from real jobs. Witness statements can come from someone who has seen your work, such as the site supervisor or the contractor you're working for. Your assessor will tell you what's acceptable before you start collecting.

How long does the Level 2 NVQ in Accessing Operations and Rigging take?

Typically 6 to 8 weeks. The biggest factor is how quickly you gather the evidence: if you're working as a scaffolder every day and send photos and statements as you go, it moves quickly.
