About the course

The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations is for bricklayers working at advanced craft level: setting out, arches, curved and decorative brickwork, chimneys and repairs to existing masonry.

Your evidence comes from the jobs you're already on, whether that's in Sheffield, Rotherham or further afield. Typical evidence: photos of complex brickwork you've set out and built, the drawings you worked from, and statements from your site manager or supervisor.

You don't sit in a classroom for this one. Enrol and pay online, and we register you and assign your assessor, who tells you exactly what to collect. Expect it to take typically 6 to 8 weeks if you keep the evidence coming.

A construction-related Level 3 NVQ is what CSCS asks for before it issues the Gold Skilled Worker card. You'll also need to have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the level for your occupation within the last two years. The Gold card is valid for five years.

If you're already running a team, the usual next steps are the Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Work Supervision and CITB's SSSTS, which runs in our Rotherham classroom and live online.

What else do I need for a Gold CSCS card as a bricklayer?

Besides the Level 3 NVQ, CSCS asks that you've passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last two years, at the level set for your occupation. Use the card finder on the CSCS website to check the test level for bricklayers. The Gold Skilled Worker card is valid for five years.

How long does the Level 3 NVQ in Trowel Occupations take?

Typically 6 to 8 weeks. The biggest factor is how quickly you gather the evidence: if you're working as a bricklayer every day and send photos and statements as you go, it moves quickly.

Do I have to come to your Rotherham venue?

No. An NVQ is assessed on the work you do, so there are no course dates or classroom sessions. Our venue at Bradmarsh Business Park in Rotherham is used for CITB classroom courses such as SSSTS and SMSTS; for the Level 3 NVQ in Trowel Occupations the evidence comes from your own jobs.
