About the course

This Level 2 Diploma is for groundworkers who already set out, dig, lay and pour on site every week. It turns that experience into a recognised qualification, which helps when a principal contractor asks for proof of competence before you start.

Your evidence comes from your current sites across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. Good evidence includes photos of trenches, drainage runs, kerbs and bases you've built, the drawings and levels you worked to, and statements from your ganger or site manager.

It doesn't take you off site. Once you've enrolled and paid online, we register you and an assessor guides you through the portfolio. Most of the time goes on collecting evidence; the whole NVQ typically takes 6 to 8 weeks.

The certificate doesn't expire. If you're using it for a CSCS card, check the card finder on the CSCS website for your occupation first: CSCS also asks for the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the right level, passed within the last two years.

Who it's for

Groundworkers and civils operatives with site experience: excavation, pipe laying, kerbing, concrete bases and reinstatement. You need to be working in the role to gather evidence.

What you'll learn

  • Working safely: health, safety and welfare on site
  • Productive working practices: drawings, specifications and programmes
  • Excavation and working near buried services
  • Laying drainage and kerbs
  • Placing concrete for bases and foundations

Will this qualification get me a CSCS card as a groundworker?

CSCS issues the Blue Skilled Worker card for construction-related Level 2 qualifications, but it decides which qualifications count for each occupation. Check the card finder on the CSCS website for groundworkers before you rely on it for a card, or call us and we'll talk it through.

Do I have to come to your Rotherham venue?

No. An NVQ is assessed on the work you do, so there are no course dates or classroom sessions. Our venue at Bradmarsh Business Park in Rotherham is used for CITB classroom courses such as SSSTS and SMSTS; for the Level 2 Diploma in Ground Works Operations the evidence comes from your own jobs.

I'm a self-employed groundworker. Can I still do it?

Yes, as long as you're working in the trade and can show evidence from real jobs. Witness statements can come from someone who has seen your work, such as the site supervisor or the contractor you're working for. Your assessor will tell you what's acceptable before you start collecting.
