About the course

The Level 5 NVQ Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations (Planning Lifts) is for appointed persons: the people who plan lifting operations, choose the crane and lifting equipment, assess the risks and write the lift plan and method statement.

LOLER 1998 requires every lifting operation to be properly planned by a competent person, and BS 7121 sets out good practice for the safe use of cranes. This NVQ proves your competence in that planning role with evidence from lifts you've actually planned.

Your evidence comes from your own lift plans, risk assessments, site and ground assessments, equipment selection and how you brief and appoint the lift supervisor and team. Your assessor reviews your portfolio and holds a recorded professional discussion with you.

Appointed persons often take this NVQ to upgrade a red CPCS A61 Appointed Person card to the blue competent operator card. Check the current CPCS rules for your card before you enrol.
