About the course

The Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations (Supervising Lifts) is for lift supervisors and crane supervisors: the people who take charge of a lift on site, make sure it follows the lift plan and control the crane operator, slingers and signallers.

The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) require lifting operations to be properly planned, appropriately supervised and carried out safely. This NVQ proves you can do the supervising part, with evidence from real lifts.

Your evidence comes from the lifts you supervise: briefing the lifting team, checking the lift plan and equipment, controlling the lift and dealing with changes such as weather or ground conditions. Your assessor observes you at work and holds a recorded professional discussion with you.

Lift supervisors often take this NVQ to upgrade a red CPCS trained operator card to the blue competent operator card. Check the current CPCS rules for your card category before you enrol. For appointed persons who plan lifts, the Level 5 Planning Lifts NVQ is the matching qualification.
