About the course

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations (Slinger/Signaller) is for people who attach loads and direct cranes and lifting equipment on site. It's the NVQ CPCS asks for before an A40 Slinger/Signaller Red card can be upgraded to a Blue Competent Operator card.

Your evidence comes from your current sites across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. Your assessor will want to see you selecting and checking lifting accessories, slinging loads and giving clear signals, in person or on video, backed by the lift plans you worked to and statements from the crane supervisor or appointed person.

An NVQ has no dates to book. You pay in full online, we register you, and your assessor agrees an evidence plan with you and reviews it as you go. Typically it takes 6 to 8 weeks from start to finish.

The NVQ is what CPCS asks for before a Red Trained Operator card can become a Blue Competent Operator card, the card that lets you operate without supervision. CPCS matches the NVQ to the card category, and it sets its own tests and rules, so check the current requirements for your category with CPCS.

Who it's for

Slinger/signallers and crane banksmen on a CPCS Red Trained Operator card (A40), or with equivalent experience, who work on lifting operations regularly.

What you'll learn

  • Working safely: health, safety and welfare on site
  • Productive working practices: drawings, specifications and programmes
  • Selecting and inspecting lifting accessories
  • Slinging and attaching loads
  • Signalling and directing the movement of suspended loads

I'm on a Red CPCS card for A40 slinger/signaller. Is this the NVQ I need?

If the category on your Red card is covered by this pathway, yes: CPCS asks for the NVQ for the category you're applying for before you can move to a Blue Competent Operator card. Red cards are time-limited, so it pays to start the NVQ early. CPCS sets the tests, fees and deadlines, so check the current rules for your category with them.

Do I have to come to your Rotherham venue?

No. An NVQ is assessed on the work you do, so there are no course dates or classroom sessions. Our venue at Bradmarsh Business Park in Rotherham is used for CITB classroom courses such as SSSTS and SMSTS; for the Level 2 NVQ in Controlling Lifting Operations the evidence comes from your own jobs.

I'm a self-employed slinger/signaller. Can I still do it?

Yes, as long as you're working in the trade and can show evidence from real jobs. Witness statements can come from someone who has seen your work, such as the site supervisor or the contractor you're working for. Your assessor will tell you what's acceptable before you start collecting.
