About the course

This is Pathway 4, Concrete Drilling and Sawing, of the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Specialist Concrete Occupations. It's for drilling and sawing operatives whose work is mainly diamond drilling and sawing concrete, and it proves you do it safely and to the specification.

Your evidence comes from the work you're doing now, from Doncaster and Barnsley to Chesterfield. Typical evidence: photos of cores, openings and cuts you've made, the drawings, permits and service scans you worked to, and statements from your supervisor.

You don't sit in a classroom for this one. Enrol and pay online, and we register you and assign your assessor, who tells you exactly what to collect. Expect it to take typically 6 to 8 weeks if you keep the evidence coming.

Once you've achieved it, you can apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card, which is valid for five years. CSCS also asks that you've passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the level for your occupation within the last two years.

Is the Concrete Drilling and Sawing pathway the right one for me?

Choose it if most of your work is diamond drilling and sawing concrete. The same qualification also comes in Concrete Repair, In Situ Flooring - Screed, In Situ Flooring - Resin and In Situ Flooring - Concrete Finisher pathways, each with its own page. If your work spans more than one, ask us before you enrol and we'll check the pathway against what you actually do.

Can I get a CSCS card while I'm still working towards the Level 2 NVQ in Specialist Concrete (Concrete Drilling and Sawing)?

Usually, yes. If you've worked as a drilling and sawing operative for at least a year in the last three and you're registered on the NVQ, CSCS offers an Experienced Worker card. It lasts one year and can't be renewed, so the idea is to finish the NVQ in that time and then apply for the Blue Skilled Worker card. You'll need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the right level either way.

I'm a self-employed drilling and sawing operative. Can I still do it?

Yes, as long as you're working in the trade and can show evidence from real jobs. Witness statements can come from someone who has seen your work, such as the site supervisor or the contractor you're working for. Your assessor will tell you what's acceptable before you start collecting.
