About the course

This is Pathway 8, In Situ Flooring - Concrete Finisher, of the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Specialist Concrete Occupations. It's for concrete floor finishers whose work is mainly power floating and finishing concrete floors, and it proves you do it safely and to the specification.

Your evidence comes from your day-to-day work, on sites in Sheffield, Doncaster or anywhere else. Typical evidence: photos of slabs you've floated and finished, the floor specifications and flatness requirements you worked to, and statements from your supervisor. Warehouse floors like those on the big logistics schemes near Doncaster are typical of the work.

It doesn't take you off site. Once you've enrolled and paid online, we register you and an assessor guides you through the portfolio. Most of the time goes on collecting evidence; the whole NVQ typically takes 6 to 8 weeks.

Once you've achieved it, you can apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card, which is valid for five years. CSCS also asks that you've passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the level for your occupation within the last two years.

Is the In Situ Flooring - Concrete Finisher pathway the right one for me?

Choose it if most of your work is power floating and finishing concrete floors. The same qualification also comes in Concrete Repair, Concrete Drilling and Sawing, In Situ Flooring - Screed and In Situ Flooring - Resin pathways, each with its own page. If your work spans more than one, ask us before you enrol and we'll check the pathway against what you actually do.

Can I get a CSCS card while I'm still working towards the Level 2 NVQ in Specialist Concrete (Concrete Finisher)?

Usually, yes. If you've worked as a concrete floor finisher for at least a year in the last three and you're registered on the NVQ, CSCS offers an Experienced Worker card. It lasts one year and can't be renewed, so the idea is to finish the NVQ in that time and then apply for the Blue Skilled Worker card. You'll need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the right level either way.

I'm a self-employed concrete floor finisher. Can I still do it?

Yes, as long as you're working in the trade and can show evidence from real jobs. Witness statements can come from someone who has seen your work, such as the site supervisor or the contractor you're working for. Your assessor will tell you what's acceptable before you start collecting.
