About the course

This is the Site Carpentry pathway of the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations. It's for site carpenters whose work is first and second fix carpentry on site, on housing, commercial and refurbishment jobs, and it proves you do it safely and to the drawings.

Your evidence comes from real jobs on your own sites around Sheffield and Rotherham. Typical evidence: photos of first fix (studwork, joists, roofs) and second fix (doors, skirtings, architraves, kitchens) you've done, the drawings you worked from, and statements from your supervisor.

An NVQ has no dates to book. You pay in full online, we register you, and your assessor agrees an evidence plan with you and reviews it as you go. Typically it takes 6 to 8 weeks from start to finish.

Once you've achieved it, you can apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card, which is valid for five years. CSCS also asks that you've passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the level for your occupation within the last two years.

The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations (Site Carpentry) is the next step for the Gold CSCS card.

Is the Site Carpentry pathway the right one for me?

Choose it if most of your work is first and second fix carpentry on site. The same qualification also comes in Timber Frame Erection pathways, each with its own page. If your work spans more than one, ask us before you enrol and we'll check the pathway against what you actually do.

Can I get a CSCS card while I'm still working towards the Level 2 NVQ in Wood Occupations (Site Carpentry)?

Usually, yes. If you've worked as a site carpenter for at least a year in the last three and you're registered on the NVQ, CSCS offers an Experienced Worker card. It lasts one year and can't be renewed, so the idea is to finish the NVQ in that time and then apply for the Blue Skilled Worker card. You'll need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the right level either way.

How long does the Level 2 NVQ in Wood Occupations (Site Carpentry) take?

Typically 6 to 8 weeks. The biggest factor is how quickly you gather the evidence: if you're working as a site carpenter every day and send photos and statements as you go, it moves quickly.
