About the course

This is Pathway 8, Processing, of the Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations. It's for operators who spend their days running crushers, screeners or batching plant, and it's the qualification CPCS asks for when you move from a Red Trained Operator card to a Blue Competent Operator card.

Your evidence comes from real jobs on your own sites around Sheffield and Rotherham. Plant NVQs lean on seeing you work: your assessor will want to observe or see video of you preparing, checking, operating and shutting down the machine, backed by your daily checks, lift or task plans and statements from your supervisor.

An NVQ has no dates to book. You pay in full online, we register you, and your assessor agrees an evidence plan with you and reviews it as you go. Typically it takes 6 to 8 weeks from start to finish.

The NVQ is what CPCS asks for before a Red Trained Operator card can become a Blue Competent Operator card, the card that lets you operate without supervision. CPCS matches the NVQ to the card category, and it sets its own tests and rules, so check the current requirements for your category with CPCS.

Who it's for

Plant operators with a CPCS Red Trained Operator card (or equivalent experience) who are running crushers, screeners or batching plant and need the NVQ for their category. You must be operating the machine regularly to build evidence.

Is the Processing pathway the right one for me?

Choose it if most of your work is running crushers, screeners or batching plant. The same qualification also comes in Cranes and Specialist Lifting, Fork-lift Trucks, Extracting, Transporting Loads, Compacting, Loading and Securing, Road/Rail and Excavating pathways, each with its own page. If your work spans more than one, ask us before you enrol and we'll check the pathway against what you actually do.

I'm on a Red CPCS card for a crusher or screener. Is this the NVQ I need?

If the category on your Red card is covered by this pathway, yes: CPCS asks for the NVQ for the category you're applying for before you can move to a Blue Competent Operator card. Red cards are time-limited, so it pays to start the NVQ early. CPCS sets the tests, fees and deadlines, so check the current rules for your category with them.

How long does the Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations (Processing) take?

Typically 6 to 8 weeks. The biggest factor is how quickly you gather the evidence: if you're working as a plant operator every day and send photos and statements as you go, it moves quickly.
