About the course

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Plant and Machinery Maintenance is for fitters who service, inspect and repair construction plant, whether in a depot or out on site. It recognises the routine maintenance and repair work you already do.

Your evidence comes from your current sites across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. Typical evidence: service sheets and job cards you've completed, photos of repairs, the manufacturer's procedures you followed, and statements from your workshop supervisor.

It doesn't take you off site. Once you've enrolled and paid online, we register you and an assessor guides you through the portfolio. Most of the time goes on collecting evidence; the whole NVQ typically takes 6 to 8 weeks.

The certificate doesn't expire. If you're using it for a CSCS card, check the card finder on the CSCS website for your occupation first: CSCS also asks for the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the right level, passed within the last two years.

The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance is the next step once you're diagnosing faults and handling complex repairs.

Do I have to come to your Rotherham venue?

No. An NVQ is assessed on the work you do, so there are no course dates or classroom sessions. Our venue at Bradmarsh Business Park in Rotherham is used for CITB classroom courses such as SSSTS and SMSTS; for the Level 2 NVQ in Plant Maintenance the evidence comes from your own jobs.

I'm a self-employed plant fitter. Can I still do it?

Yes, as long as you're working in the trade and can show evidence from real jobs. Witness statements can come from someone who has seen your work, such as the site supervisor or the contractor you're working for. Your assessor will tell you what's acceptable before you start collecting.

How long does the Level 2 NVQ in Plant Maintenance take?

Typically 6 to 8 weeks. The biggest factor is how quickly you gather the evidence: if you're working as a plant fitter every day and send photos and statements as you go, it moves quickly.
