About the course

This is the Fully Supported Lead and Hard Metal Roofer and Cladder pathway of the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Roofing Occupations. It's for leadworkers whose work is leadwork and hard metal roofing and cladding, on new-build and re-roofing jobs, and it proves you work safely at height and to the specification.

Your evidence comes from the jobs you're already on, whether that's in Sheffield, Rotherham or further afield. Typical evidence: photos of lead and hard metal roofs, flashings and cladding you've formed and fixed, the details and specifications you worked to, and statements from your supervisor.

There are no course dates and nothing to attend. You enrol and pay in full online, we register you, and your assessor plans with you what evidence you need. It typically takes 6 to 8 weeks, depending on how quickly the evidence comes together.

Once you've achieved it, you can apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card, which is valid for five years. CSCS also asks that you've passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the level for your occupation within the last two years.

Is the Fully Supported Lead and Hard Metal Roofer and Cladder pathway the right one for me?

Choose it if most of your work is leadwork and hard metal roofing and cladding. The same qualification also comes in Roof Tiler and Roof Slater and Tiler pathways, each with its own page. If your work spans more than one, ask us before you enrol and we'll check the pathway against what you actually do.

Can I get a CSCS card while I'm still working towards the Level 2 NVQ in Roofing (Lead and Hard Metal)?

Usually, yes. If you've worked as a leadworker for at least a year in the last three and you're registered on the NVQ, CSCS offers an Experienced Worker card. It lasts one year and can't be renewed, so the idea is to finish the NVQ in that time and then apply for the Blue Skilled Worker card. You'll need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the right level either way.

How long does the Level 2 NVQ in Roofing (Lead and Hard Metal) take?

Typically 6 to 8 weeks. The biggest factor is how quickly you gather the evidence: if you're working as a leadworker every day and send photos and statements as you go, it moves quickly.
