About the course

This is Pathway 7, General Construction, of the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction and Civil Engineering Operations. It's for general construction operatives whose work is mainly general construction work across a site, on building and civil engineering sites, and it proves you do it safely and to specification.

Your evidence comes from real jobs on your own sites around Sheffield and Rotherham. Typical evidence: photos of the range of tasks you do, from setting up work areas and moving materials to laying and placing, with the method statements you followed and statements from your supervisor.

An NVQ has no dates to book. You pay in full online, we register you, and your assessor agrees an evidence plan with you and reviews it as you go. Typically it takes 6 to 8 weeks from start to finish.

Once you've achieved it, you can apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card, which is valid for five years. CSCS also asks that you've passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the level for your occupation within the last two years.

Starting to look after a small gang? CITB's SSSTS supervisor course runs in our Rotherham classroom and live online, and pairs well with the NVQ.

Is the General Construction pathway the right one for me?

Choose it if most of your work is general construction work across a site. The same qualification also comes in Concreting, Structural Concreting and Drainage Construction pathways, each with its own page. If your work spans more than one, ask us before you enrol and we'll check the pathway against what you actually do.

Can I get a CSCS card while I'm still working towards the Level 2 NVQ in Construction and Civil Engineering (General Construction)?

Usually, yes. If you've worked as a general construction operative for at least a year in the last three and you're registered on the NVQ, CSCS offers an Experienced Worker card. It lasts one year and can't be renewed, so the idea is to finish the NVQ in that time and then apply for the Blue Skilled Worker card. You'll need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the right level either way.

How long does the Level 2 NVQ in Construction and Civil Engineering (General Construction) take?

Typically 6 to 8 weeks. The biggest factor is how quickly you gather the evidence: if you're working as a general construction operative every day and send photos and statements as you go, it moves quickly.
