About the course

The Level 3 NVQ Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is for people with health and safety responsibilities alongside, or as part of, their main job: supervisors, team leaders, safety representatives, junior health and safety advisers and site coordinators. It isn't specific to construction, so it also suits manufacturing, warehousing and logistics teams around Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley.

You show how you make sure your own work and your team's work is safe: spotting hazards, assessing and controlling risks, following and improving safe systems of work, monitoring procedures and helping to manage health and safety where you work.

As a Certificate it's smaller than a Diploma, and it's assessed entirely on your job, with no exams. You build your portfolio online and your assessor observes you at work, in person or by video.

It's a natural step towards the Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice if you move into a full-time safety role. If you need a CSCS card, check CSCS's card finder for your occupation before you rely on this qualification for one.

Who it's for

Supervisors, team leaders, safety representatives and junior safety advisers in any sector who have health and safety responsibilities as part of their job.

What you'll learn

  • Making sure your own actions reduce risks
  • Identifying hazards and assessing risk
  • Controlling risks and safe systems of work
  • Monitoring health and safety procedures
  • Contributing to managing health and safety at work

Who is the Level 3 health and safety NVQ for?

People who help manage health and safety as part of their job, such as supervisors, team leaders, safety representatives and junior safety advisers, in construction or any other sector.

How is it different from the Level 6 NVQ?

The Level 3 Certificate is about managing health and safety in your own area of work. The Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is for safety managers and advisers who set policy and lead safety across an organisation.

Is it the same as IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH?

No. IOSH Managing Safely and the NEBOSH General Certificate are taught courses that end in an assessment or exam, and both run live online with a tutor. This NVQ is assessed on evidence from your own job, with no taught days.

Will it get me a CSCS card?

CSCS decides which qualifications it accepts for each occupation. Check CSCS's card finder before you rely on this NVQ for a card. For a Gold Supervisor card in construction, the Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision NVQ is the usual route.
