About the course

This is Pathway 9, Loading and Securing, of the Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations. It's for operators who spend their days loading plant onto transport and securing it for the road, and it's the qualification CPCS asks for when you move from a Red Trained Operator card to a Blue Competent Operator card.

Your evidence comes from the sites you work on, anywhere from Barnsley to Worksop. Your assessor will want to observe or see video of you preparing plant for transport, loading it, and choosing and fitting restraints, backed by the load and transport paperwork and statements from your supervisor.

There are no course dates and nothing to attend. You enrol and pay in full online, we register you, and your assessor plans with you what evidence you need. It typically takes 6 to 8 weeks, depending on how quickly the evidence comes together.

The NVQ is what CPCS asks for before a Red Trained Operator card can become a Blue Competent Operator card, the card that lets you operate without supervision. CPCS matches the NVQ to the card category, and it sets its own tests and rules, so check the current requirements for your category with CPCS.

Who it's for

Plant operators with a CPCS Red Trained Operator card (or equivalent experience) who are loading plant onto transport and securing it for the road and need the NVQ for their category. You must be operating the machine regularly to build evidence.

What you'll learn

  • Working safely: health, safety and welfare on site
  • Productive working practices: drawings, specifications and programmes
  • Units in this pathway:
  • Arranging and securing plant or machinery for transport
  • Slinging and signalling suspended loads, or guiding vehicle and plant movements
  • Operating plant for non-operational moves, such as loading on and off transport

How NVQs work

An NVQ has no course dates. You prove you're competent with evidence from the work you already do, with an assessor guiding you from start to finish.

Is the Loading and Securing pathway the right one for me?

Choose it if most of your work is loading plant onto transport and securing it for the road. The same qualification also comes in Cranes and Specialist Lifting, Fork-lift Trucks, Extracting, Transporting Loads, Compacting, Processing, Road/Rail and Excavating pathways, each with its own page. If your work spans more than one, ask us before you enrol and we'll check the pathway against what you actually do.

I'm on a Red CPCS card for loading and securing plant. Is this the NVQ I need?

If the category on your Red card is covered by this pathway, yes: CPCS asks for the NVQ for the category you're applying for before you can move to a Blue Competent Operator card. Red cards are time-limited, so it pays to start the NVQ early. CPCS sets the tests, fees and deadlines, so check the current rules for your category with them.

Do I have to come to your Rotherham venue?

No. An NVQ is assessed on the work you do, so there are no course dates or classroom sessions. Our venue at Bradmarsh Business Park in Rotherham is used for CITB classroom courses such as SSSTS and SMSTS; for the Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations (Loading and Securing) the evidence comes from your own jobs.
