About the course

The Level 2 NVQ in Insulation and Building Treatments is for installers who fit insulation to existing and new buildings and apply building treatments. It suits retrofit and energy efficiency work as well as new build.

Your evidence comes from your day-to-day work, on sites in Sheffield, Doncaster or anywhere else. Typical evidence: photos of the property before, during and after the install, the survey, design and specification you worked to, and statements from your supervisor.

An NVQ has no dates to book. You pay in full online, we register you, and your assessor agrees an evidence plan with you and reviews it as you go. Typically it takes 6 to 8 weeks from start to finish.

Once you've achieved it, you can apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card, which is valid for five years. CSCS also asks that you've passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the level for your occupation within the last two years.

Can I get a CSCS card while I'm still working towards the Level 2 NVQ in Insulation and Building Treatments?

Usually, yes. If you've worked as a insulation installer for at least a year in the last three and you're registered on the NVQ, CSCS offers an Experienced Worker card. It lasts one year and can't be renewed, so the idea is to finish the NVQ in that time and then apply for the Blue Skilled Worker card. You'll need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the right level either way.

I'm a self-employed insulation installer. Can I still do it?

Yes, as long as you're working in the trade and can show evidence from real jobs. Witness statements can come from someone who has seen your work, such as the site supervisor or the contractor you're working for. Your assessor will tell you what's acceptable before you start collecting.

How long does the Level 2 NVQ in Insulation and Building Treatments take?

Typically 6 to 8 weeks. The biggest factor is how quickly you gather the evidence: if you're working as a insulation installer every day and send photos and statements as you go, it moves quickly.
