About the course

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Roadbuilding and Maintenance is for operatives who lay, surface and repair roads, footways and kerbs, working safely next to live traffic and inside traffic management.

Your evidence comes from real jobs on your own sites around Sheffield and Rotherham. Typical evidence: photos of surfacing, patching, kerbing and reinstatement you've done, the traffic management and job details you worked to, and statements from your ganger or supervisor.

It doesn't take you off site. Once you've enrolled and paid online, we register you and an assessor guides you through the portfolio. Most of the time goes on collecting evidence; the whole NVQ typically takes 6 to 8 weeks.

Once you've achieved it, you can apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card, which is valid for five years. CSCS also asks that you've passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the level for your occupation within the last two years.

Who it's for

Can I get a CSCS card while I'm still working towards the Level 2 NVQ in Roadbuilding and Maintenance?

Usually, yes. If you've worked as a road worker for at least a year in the last three and you're registered on the NVQ, CSCS offers an Experienced Worker card. It lasts one year and can't be renewed, so the idea is to finish the NVQ in that time and then apply for the Blue Skilled Worker card. You'll need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the right level either way.

How long does the Level 2 NVQ in Roadbuilding and Maintenance take?

Typically 6 to 8 weeks. The biggest factor is how quickly you gather the evidence: if you're working as a road worker every day and send photos and statements as you go, it moves quickly.

Do I have to come to your Rotherham venue?

No. An NVQ is assessed on the work you do, so there are no course dates or classroom sessions. Our venue at Bradmarsh Business Park in Rotherham is used for CITB classroom courses such as SSSTS and SMSTS; for the Level 2 NVQ in Roadbuilding and Maintenance the evidence comes from your own jobs.
