About the course
This is the Estimating pathway (Pathway 1) of the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations. It's for estimators, assistant estimators and estimating technicians at contractors and subcontractors who prepare prices for construction work.
Your evidence comes from the estimates you produce: reading tender documents, drawings and specifications, measuring and taking off quantities, getting and comparing quotations from suppliers and subcontractors, building up rates and presenting your estimate for review.
It's assessed entirely on your job, so there's no classroom to attend. Most of the evidence is documents you already produce, supported by a recorded professional discussion with your assessor.
As a Level 3 technical NVQ it supports an application for the CSCS Gold Supervisor card, which technical staff often need for site visits. If you move into commercial management, the Level 6 NVQ in Construction Contracting Operations Management is the next step.

Is the Estimating pathway right for me?
Choose it if most of your job is pricing work: taking off quantities, getting quotes and building up rates for tenders. If you mainly measure and value work that's already under way, the Surveying pathway fits better.
Which CSCS card does it lead to?
CSCS accepts construction supervisory and technical NVQs at Level 3 or 4 for the Gold Supervisor card. With the NVQ and a pass in the right CITB Health, Safety and Environment test taken within the last two years, you can apply. CSCS's card finder confirms the card and test for your occupation.
Why are there several versions of this NVQ?
The Construction Contracting Operations NVQ has pathways for different technical roles. We offer Estimating, Surveying, Site Technical Support and General. Pick the one that matches the job you do now, because your evidence has to come from it.
Can I do it while working in the office?
Yes. Most estimating evidence is documents, such as take-offs, enquiry records and estimate build-ups, and your assessor can cover the rest through a recorded professional discussion.
