About the course

This is Pathway 4, Transporting Loads, of the Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations. It's for operators who spend their days driving dumpers, dump trucks or other load-carrying plant, and it's the qualification CPCS asks for when you move from a Red Trained Operator card to a Blue Competent Operator card.

Your evidence comes from your current sites across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. Plant NVQs lean on seeing you work: your assessor will want to observe or see video of you preparing, checking, operating and shutting down the machine, backed by your daily checks, lift or task plans and statements from your supervisor.

It doesn't take you off site. Once you've enrolled and paid online, we register you and an assessor guides you through the portfolio. Most of the time goes on collecting evidence; the whole NVQ typically takes 6 to 8 weeks.

The NVQ is what CPCS asks for before a Red Trained Operator card can become a Blue Competent Operator card, the card that lets you operate without supervision. CPCS matches the NVQ to the card category, and it sets its own tests and rules, so check the current requirements for your category with CPCS.

Who it's for

Plant operators with a CPCS Red Trained Operator card (or equivalent experience) who are driving dumpers, dump trucks or other load-carrying plant and need the NVQ for their category. You must be operating the machine regularly to build evidence.

What you'll learn

  • Working safely: health, safety and welfare on site
  • Productive working practices: drawings, specifications and programmes
  • Machine units in this pathway (you're assessed on the one you operate):
  • Forward tipping dumpers
  • Rear tipping dump trucks
  • Tractors with towed equipment
  • Trailer-mounted concrete pumps and static placing booms
  • Self-propelled bowsers and volumetric trucks

Is the Transporting Loads pathway the right one for me?

Choose it if most of your work is driving dumpers, dump trucks or other load-carrying plant. The same qualification also comes in Cranes and Specialist Lifting, Fork-lift Trucks, Extracting, Compacting, Processing, Loading and Securing, Road/Rail and Excavating pathways, each with its own page. If your work spans more than one, ask us before you enrol and we'll check the pathway against what you actually do.

I'm on a Red CPCS card for a dumper or dump truck. Is this the NVQ I need?

If the category on your Red card is covered by this pathway, yes: CPCS asks for the NVQ for the category you're applying for before you can move to a Blue Competent Operator card. Red cards are time-limited, so it pays to start the NVQ early. CPCS sets the tests, fees and deadlines, so check the current rules for your category with them.

I drive a forward tipping dumper. Which pathway is that?

Transporting Loads. Forward tipping dumpers are one of its machine units, along with rear tipping dump trucks, tractors with towed equipment, concrete pumps and placing booms, bowsers and volumetric trucks.
