About the course

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Formwork is for formworkers who set out, erect, check and strike formwork for walls, columns, slabs and other concrete elements, whether traditional timber or proprietary systems.

Your evidence comes from the jobs you're already on, whether that's in Sheffield, Rotherham or further afield. Typical evidence: photos of formwork you've erected and struck, the formwork drawings and temporary works details you worked to, permits to load and strike, and statements from your supervisor.

You don't sit in a classroom for this one. Enrol and pay online, and we register you and assign your assessor, who tells you exactly what to collect. Expect it to take typically 6 to 8 weeks if you keep the evidence coming.

Once you've achieved it, you can apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card, which is valid for five years. CSCS also asks that you've passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the level for your occupation within the last two years.

Can I get a CSCS card while I'm still working towards the Level 2 NVQ in Formwork?

Usually, yes. If you've worked as a formworker for at least a year in the last three and you're registered on the NVQ, CSCS offers an Experienced Worker card. It lasts one year and can't be renewed, so the idea is to finish the NVQ in that time and then apply for the Blue Skilled Worker card. You'll need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the right level either way.

Is formwork temporary works, and does that matter for the NVQ?

Yes, formwork is temporary works, so your evidence should show you working to the design and to the permit to load and strike. If you go on to supervise it, CITB's Temporary Works Supervisor course runs in our Rotherham classroom and live online.

How long does the Level 2 NVQ in Formwork take?

Typically 6 to 8 weeks. The biggest factor is how quickly you gather the evidence: if you're working as a formworker every day and send photos and statements as you go, it moves quickly.
