About the course

This is the Roof Slater and Tiler pathway of the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Roofing Occupations. It's for roofers whose work is both slating and tiling, on new-build and re-roofing jobs, and it proves you work safely at height and to the specification.

Your evidence comes from your day-to-day work, on sites in Sheffield, Doncaster or anywhere else. Typical evidence: photos of slated and tiled roofs you've completed, from battening to details at verges, valleys and abutments, the specifications you followed, and statements from your supervisor.

An NVQ has no dates to book. You pay in full online, we register you, and your assessor agrees an evidence plan with you and reviews it as you go. Typically it takes 6 to 8 weeks from start to finish.

Once you've achieved it, you can apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card, which is valid for five years. CSCS also asks that you've passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the level for your occupation within the last two years.

Is the Roof Slater and Tiler pathway the right one for me?

Choose it if most of your work is both slating and tiling. The same qualification also comes in Roof Tiler and Fully Supported Lead and Hard Metal Roofer and Cladder pathways, each with its own page. If your work spans more than one, ask us before you enrol and we'll check the pathway against what you actually do.

Can I get a CSCS card while I'm still working towards the Level 2 NVQ in Roofing (Roof Slater and Tiler)?

Usually, yes. If you've worked as a roofer for at least a year in the last three and you're registered on the NVQ, CSCS offers an Experienced Worker card. It lasts one year and can't be renewed, so the idea is to finish the NVQ in that time and then apply for the Blue Skilled Worker card. You'll need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the right level either way.

I'm a self-employed roofer. Can I still do it?

Yes, as long as you're working in the trade and can show evidence from real jobs. Witness statements can come from someone who has seen your work, such as the site supervisor or the contractor you're working for. Your assessor will tell you what's acceptable before you start collecting.
