About the course

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Associated Industrial Services Occupations (Passive Fire Protection) is for installers of fire stopping, penetration seals and fire-resisting board and barrier systems. Fire safety work gets close scrutiny, and the NVQ is independent proof that you install to the tested detail.

Your evidence comes from the sites you work on, anywhere from Barnsley to Worksop. Typical evidence: photos of each stage of your fire stopping and seals, the manufacturer's details and specifications you installed to, your installation records and labels, and statements from your supervisor.

You don't sit in a classroom for this one. Enrol and pay online, and we register you and assign your assessor, who tells you exactly what to collect. Expect it to take typically 6 to 8 weeks if you keep the evidence coming.

Once you've achieved it, you can apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card, which is valid for five years. CSCS also asks that you've passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the level for your occupation within the last two years.

Can I get a CSCS card while I'm still working towards the Level 2 NVQ in Passive Fire Protection?

Usually, yes. If you've worked as a passive fire protection installer for at least a year in the last three and you're registered on the NVQ, CSCS offers an Experienced Worker card. It lasts one year and can't be renewed, so the idea is to finish the NVQ in that time and then apply for the Blue Skilled Worker card. You'll need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the right level either way.

What evidence works best for passive fire protection?

Clear photos of each stage (before, during and after sealing), matched to the manufacturer's detail you installed to, plus your installation records. Hidden work can't be inspected later, so photographing as you go makes the NVQ much quicker.

Do I have to come to your Rotherham venue?

No. An NVQ is assessed on the work you do, so there are no course dates or classroom sessions. Our venue at Bradmarsh Business Park in Rotherham is used for CITB classroom courses such as SSSTS and SMSTS; for the Level 2 NVQ in Passive Fire Protection the evidence comes from your own jobs.
